Course Approval
The Board does not pre-approve specific courses.
A course or educational activity must be presented by a
board-approved
provider/sponsor in order for the activity to be accepted.
Acceptable continuing education includes
courses and educational activities:
Courses
To be considered acceptable, a course
must be administered by an approved sponsor, in an approved subject area and
in an approved format. Additionally, the student must have the
opportunity for immediate interaction with an instructor/presenter, e.g. a
seminar, workshop, lecture, technical presentation, etc.
Educational Activities
A number of activities meet the Board's
definition of educational activities. Among these, the Board
classifies online courses under the heading of "self-study" activities.
Self-study must be taken from an approved provider and in an acceptable
subject area and be structured study that is based on audio, audio-visual,
written, online, or other media, and does not meet the criteria established
for live instruction. In addition, a self-study program must
have a testing instrument, which is completed by the licensee and returned
to the sponsor for scoring. A passing grade is required before a sponsor may
award continuing education credit.
Sponsor Approval
The Board does pre-approve course sponsors.
Online Courses
Online courses are accepted.
A maximum of 18 PDH may be
earned each renewal period from online continuing education courses, which are
classified as Continuing Educational Activities by the New York State
Board.
For engineers earning professional development
hours prior to January, 2007, up to 18 PDH may be earned from Continuing
Educational Activities, even though the % of Continuing Educational
Activities is greater than 50%. For example, engineers who renew
on 7/1/05 require 18 hours of credit. All 18 hours may be earned from
Continuing Educational Activities. For engineers renewing on
8/1/05, up to 18 hours of credit may be earned from Continuing Educational
Activities, in which case the other 1 hour must be earned from courses.
